In the recent years, advancements in electronics made it possible to consider nano-satellites, such as 10×10×10 cm or 10×10×30 cm sized CubeSats to be part of astrophysical missions. In this talk, we summarize the current status of the GRBAlpha initiative, a precursory design to validate the feasibility of employing gamma-detectors on a 1-unit CubeSats. The detector payload system is currently under development, led by Konkoly Observatory in collaboration with Hiroshima University, MTA/TKI and ELTE while the platform side is supplied via Slovak Organisation for Space Activities as an upgraded version of the previous SKCube design. Once validated, the detector design will form the core of the Cubesats Applied for MEasuring and LOcalising Transients (CAMELOT) mission, a fleet of larger, 3-unit CubeSats providing instantaneous timing-based localization of gamma-ray bursts.
